Introduction
Synchronised waveform monitoring has the potential to enable advanced, automatic protection, automation, and control applications. Combined with appropriate processing and analysis techniques, waveform data can unlock several new capabilities – beyond what can be achieved with conventional synchrophasors or SCADA-based monitoring. This article serves as a review of these key emerging applications, such as transient monitoring, locating oscillations, and wildfire prevention. Practical options for the signal processing, computation, and communications infrastructure required for real-time applications are evaluated.
