Synaptec enables affordable line differential protection over longer distances than conventional technology, ideal for complex circuits.

Our passive sensors require no data networks, control power, or expensive civil works, and provide live data more reliably and securely from more remote and inaccessible locations.

This multi-point instrumentation technology enables line differential protection for complex feeders containing cable sections, overhead line and transformer, cable tail ends or multiple branches without the associated complexity or cost of conventional technologies.

Challenges in wide-area protection

The instrumentation and protection of new grid connections, for example to renewable generation or data centre projects, can be challenging to deliver economically.

Distance protection schemes, often favoured from the perspective of cost and simplicity, cannot determine the faulted branch and present issues relating to over- or under-reach. The more robust alternative, line differential protection, introduces its own challenges, including:

  1. A requirement for dedicated telecommunications infrastructure
  2. Accurate time synchronisation required at all remote points
  3. A lack of space in older, more remote substations in the area where renewables often connect

Our solution

Our Distributed Electrical Sensing (DES) technology can instrument and reliably identify any number of faulted sections in these complex circuits over longer distances. This improves on the limitations of distance protection while avoiding the traditional capital cost of line differential protection.

By eliminating the need for control power, data networks or expensive civils works, our passive sensor solution radically reduces the capital cost of instrumentation for line differential protection for complex circuits.
