Synaptec partnering with GE Grid Solutions, ABB, and ScottishPower to deliver £11m innovation project
03 December 2015
Synaptec will partner with ScottishPower, GE Grid Solutions, ABB and the University of Manchester to deliver an innovation project designed by SP Energy Networks to help deliver a smarter electricity network for consumers. The project, to be led by ScottishPower Energy Networks, has been successfully awarded as part of Ofgem’s 2015 Network Innovation Competition.
FITNESS (Future Intelligent Transmission Network Substation) aims to deliver a state-of-the-art digital substation design. This will use digitised measurement for protection, control and monitoring instead of traditional copper wiring and conventional measurement equipment. Successful delivery of this project will reduce future costs associated with new and replacement substations while reducing environmental impact and land requirements. £8.3m of funding has been awarded by Ofgem for the project, which will be led by ScottishPower and delivered in partnership with GE Grid Solutions, ABB, and the University of Manchester.
Dr Philip Orr, Managing Director at Synaptec, said:
We are delighted to be a component of this excellent consortium, and we look forward to helping to deliver the first UK pilot of a live multi-vendor digital substation instrumentation system. I view our inclusion in this project as recognition of our potential to contribute to achieving a more robust, efficient and capable approach to substation instrumentation based upon digital and fibre-optic technologies.
